EMAILS

Hey Buzz Crew! Let me tell you about my HP TouchPad Odyssey.

- I bought an HP TouchPad on launch day for $521 (including tax & $10 off coupon from Best Buy).

- I sell the same TouchPad for $350 the day HP pulls the plug.
- On Saturday, I buy a new HP TouchPad on eBay for $131 shipped.
- I go back to BestBuy (after they start selling the TouchPads for $99) and get a price match. They refund me $425.

So….

I basically end up with a FREE HP TouchPad AND $123 in my pocket. Not too bad.
Tech Harvest

—–

Buzz Crew,

I’ve been seeing a lot of stories over the weekend about the $99 HP TouchPad, and a lot of them were why you shouldn’t get one. But most of those stories talked about the lack apps, the lack of support, etc., when this is actually a great thing for the ecosystem, no matter how dead it may or may not be. HP probably made at least 500,000 of these, since Best Buy had 200,000 alone, so that’s 500,000 new app costumers, and also 500,000 new WebOS users. If HP is smart, which is questionable these days, they would license it out, or make it open source, so that people who got a TouchPad dirt cheap and realize they like WebOS could still get a device, and so WebOS developers still have some platform to develop for. I have a feeling that WebOS developers are going to make a lot of money in the next few weeks. Also, HP just killed the hardware. They are still providing support and a 1 year warranty for TouchPads, so its not a completely dead product.

Love the show (especially computer love)
Ryan from New Jersey
rygavs in the chatroom

PS- I bought 3 32GB ones- one for me, my dad, and a friend

—–

As I was walking out of Stop & Shop yesterday I noticed that the hand held easy checkout devices you can manually use to purchase in store all said “”Motorola”” on them. I assume this is motorola mobility. Now that Google has acquired Mobility will they be getting into the consumer shopping experience as well? I could absolutely see Android as a vital component to large food chain shopping stores everywhere. From cashiers corner to aisle inventory. Just wanted to get your thoughts. The show is amazing, huge fan.

—–

Hey Buzz Crew!

Taylor From Canada Here,

I just finished reading your WP7 Challenge Verdict and I can’t believe some of the comments people are leaving on the story! I’m shocked! I thought you gave a very good unbiased review of the phone and the OS. You gave a review from the “everyday consumer’s” point of view who just want things to work. You even tried a few services that where suggested to you and you didn’t really like them, that’s fine! You’re allowed to dislike it! People just need to realise that, as you said, a Smartphone is now a lifestyle and clearly WP7 just isn’t for you. But for people to now dislike you or say you’re not into technology is ridiculous. All the WP7 fanboys/girls owe Molly an apology.

But that’s just my opinion… I’m 16 what do I know? Later!
Taylor

Google gets into the social gaming biz, because it turns out that social gaming addiction is the key to all social media success. Well, and a 5% cut of the profits compared to Facebook’s 30%. Nice move, Google. Scotland Yard is using Britain’s huge network of spy cams plus facial recognition software to track down looters, DARPA just ditched millions of our dollars somewhere over the Pacific (again), and Computer Love plays it safe.

Buzz Crew,
I need your advice.
I have the most amazing man in the world. We have been living together for a year and a half. I have never been so happy (I’m 33) and I am wondering how I got so lucky.
I hate to admit to your show, but I am a non-gamer …that is in love with a diehard gamer. For the most part he has quit gaming inspite of me encouraging him to have chill time (gaming). I like to go out with my friends but have started staying home more to be with him and they have noticed. We are both NOT doing things we enjoy just to make each other feel more comfortable. I know this will lead to resentment and have told him this. He disagrees and says he is fine with how things are. Well, tonight he got to enjoy his type of music while I am at work. I have told him I’m ok with him listening to it while I am home, I don’t mind being exposed to new stuff… and IF I don’t like it then I can go do my own thing in another room or outside. Either way, I’m ok with it.

Bottom line- I want him to be himself, not someone that bends to fit me every moment of the day. I also expect him to be ok with me doing my own thing, which may or may not be the reason why he refrains.
I’m so scared of him revolting years from now and having a midlife crisis. I love him for everything he is and I need to somehow make him understand this.
Should I just drop the issue or continue to encourage his true gamer, death metal loving, self?
Gamer Lover

—–

Buzz love connection,
I thought I’d right to you and ask for your advice because you all seem to understand that a tech celeb is still a celebrity. My non-tech girl friends don’t have the same perspective.

I work for a major agency handling a lot of their digital media buying, so I attend a lot of industry events (I’ll spare you the boring details). I end up seeing a lot of the same people/speakers. Over the last 2 years, I’ve become particularly fond of this one speaker, a product manager from Google, named Aaron Rothman (kind-of a pseudo-tech celebrity). He has spoken at CES, and a lot of events on both the east and west coasts. He is super smart, engaging, and very funny. He also happens to be gorgeous (I attached some publicly available pics so you can see for yourself). After he speaks, I always make sure to go up and chat with him. It seems that we have a real chemistry, but then he seems so charming with everyone he meets. I know he isn’t a Jack Dorsey (wink, wink Molly) in terms of nerd celebrity status, but I still feel a bit intimidated about asking him out.

Should I ask him out? If he says no, I’m afraid it will be really awkward if I keep attending the events he speaks at. Worse, he might think I’m stalking him or something.

Love the show!

much love,

Dear buzz crew:

Recently there has been a pick up of stories dealing with cyber-attacks on your show. Also recently you have been “”voicing your opinion”” on all the annoying things that you find with facebook. Well it seems that you may get your wish to see fb crash and burn (j/k).

I have read and heard reports that Anonymous has sent out a communication that it will destroy (not attack, not shut down) facebook on the 5th of November (reference to V for Vendetta) for allegedly selling user info to third parties. Is this true? If so, I would think that a lot of people would close their accounts on November 4th bracing themselves for the attack. Is that a good idea? I mean, how exposed would fb users like myself be to the collateral fire of an attack from Anonymous to fb???!?!?

Lov seeing you guys everyday from the beautiful Puerto Rico!!

Ahernan1

—–

Dearest Molly Hood,

I thought I’d share this interesting tech culture nugget:

http://gizmodo.com/5829033/how-did-jay+z-and-kanye-keep-the-biggest-album-of-the-year-from-leaking

It’s funny, because I heard about the album for the first time this morning (the radio folks were talking about Kanye’s most recent antics in England, sigh), and I thought to myself, “”How have I not heard about this before!? How has nothing leaked on the net already?!””

Well, apparently there was a reason for that. At first blush, it may seem to contrary to common sense, but when you think about it, it’s actually quite ingenious. Album leaks are usually due to stolen and then ripped CD’s. SOO: if you don’t press any CD’s (aka digital release only) –> and you are the only people with the files –> no album to leak! Clever, gentlemen. Clever.

Perhaps an emerging trend in the industry?

I guess you give up being able to promote your album BEFORE it comes out on radio stations/viral video sites, but I think the opposite approach can work too: hype can build by holding you cards close to your chest as well, keep your fans wondering, guessing a la some Fruit-monikered companies out there

Holla,
$$$$ Bling Rx $$$$

—–

Hi Brian and Molly,

I have a “”well in addition to…”” comment about the Solar EXPLOSIONS happening on the Sun in episode 1526.

I’ve recently attended a conference focused in the preservation of Media including folks from the public (Library of Congress, PBS, Universities) and private (FOX, Sony, NBC etc…) sectors. The moderator brought up the Carrington event in 1895 and how when (not if) another one occurs, every piece of magnetic storage not protected by a Faraday cage will become paperweights. After making every archivist in the room shat their pants, he pimped his start-up tech company that is creating a optical tape medium that would be impervious to the effects of the coronal mass ejection(I’ll pause so Brian has time to stop giggling….). Needless to say, there is both truth and a profit motive in his DOOMS-DAY scenario.

If we do lose the solar lottery, and if there aren’t occurrences of re-animated corpses, Godzilla, heating of the earth’s core or a rapture and we’d just be without electronic devices, let me be the first to pledge my allegiance to the Neo-Amish King, Donald Bell.

-Pom the Digital Asset Manager

Listening since summer 2005

—–

Hey buzzcrew,

I think what Blink-182 did with their Youtube video remix thing is perfectly warranted. Regardless of what you think of it, copyright law is in fact, just that: a law. Whenever you upload a video to Youtube, Google warns you not to include music that you don’t have the rights to, but these people decided to go ahead and do that anyway. Thus, if Blink-182 wanted to, they could have sued these home movie makers into oblivion and gotten away with it. Instead, they’re giving them fifteen minutes of fame, while also pointing out that they made a small mistake. If anything, Blink-182 let these copyright violators get off a bit easier than they could have, though partnering with AT&T does look pretty bad.

-Jack W

EMAILS

True Story:
On Monday July 25th I walked into my local AT&T store to look at some simple messaging phones for my 12 year old daughter.
The sales guy who greeted me did an excellent job of stepping me right up through the messaging phones all the way up to the Motorola Atrix.

At this time he asked me what phone I used, and I replied iPhone4. My sales guy immediately started gushing about how great the iPhone is and that he couldn’t wait for the iPhone 5 to be release on Sept 5. Being rather informed on such things thanks to your podcast, I replied “”well, the rumors have the phone releasing in September, but I hadn’t heard an official date””. The AT&T sales rep looked me straight in the eye and said, “”my manager tells me it is going to release on September 5th””.

I waited a couple days to write your show, because I figured with this sales rep being so candid about the release date, that it must be common knowledge. But a couple days have gone by and I’ve not heard you guys say any more about it, so I thought I better speak up.

Thanks again for the great show.

COMPUTER LOVE

Hey buzzcrew,

I’ve been thinking about getting in touch for a while, but now I have a very easy way to describe it all, it seems the right time.

Basically, last year I “”did a Weiner”” and put my marriage in jeopardy. I got some female attention that, being a typical BOL listener, I didn’t expect and didn’t know what to do with, and made a very bad decision that I deeply regret. Things were touch and go for a while, but I’m very happy to say things are getting back on track now after what I did, which was pretty reprehensible. Now we are looking to get on with our lives though, things aren’t that great for me in tech world.

Part of the deal to keep going was for me to quit using any social networking, basically anything that permitted any form of private messaging. Whilst there were a few exceptions (e.g. LinkedIN), I don’t even go anywhere near Twitter these days for fear of my browser history showing up.

I’m not great socially and have few opportunities to meet people and make friends where I live, and the few tools that used to help me keep in touch with distant friends and find new ones nearby are currently out of reach. Please don’t take this as some sort of comparison between a loving marriage and my interests in seeing what Google+, but I’m feeling more isolated by the day and have no way to really talk to anyone about it – I’d like to post on a relationship support forum etc, but naturally that’s a no go.

Should I just be manning up and forgetting about the world of social networking, and how is it even possible to do that as it pervades daily life so much. I came out in a cold sweat the other day when someone did send me a G+ invite, incase she’d already seen it unread in my inbox.

Cheers

Dave

—–

Dear Computer Love,

I start to develop a relationship with a girl who work in the same company.
The problem is, it is 3 months already, since we known each other and she go out with me only 2 times.
When i asked her to go out (e.g. movie ,lunch or dinner) she will came up with a one hundred reasons like
(I want to have lunch with my friends. , I want to stay at home, I am too lazy for today… , Oh Sorry but i have to finished the report this weekend… , blah blah blah)

We are communicate by using facebook chat all the time and I don’t like the way it is.
When i told her that, we rarely to see the real each other, she answer to me that “”But we still talk using the facebook chat””.

I am quite sure that she didn’t have someone else because she do the same with her friends when they asked her to go out.

I want a real relationship i.e. no keyboard, no computer and no facebook.
Just face to face talking with each other in the real world.

What should i do? Turn off the internet? I still confuse and frustrate!
Or should i end this relationship? Help!

1-The first rule requires both wireless and wireline providers to be transparent in how they manage and operate their networks.

2-The second Net neutrality rule prohibits the blocking of traffic on the Internet. The rule applies to both fixed wireline broadband network operators as well as to wireless providers. But the stipulations for each type of network are slightly different.

3-For fixed broadband networks, operators cannot block any lawful content, services, applications, or devices on their network. Wireless providers area also prohibited from blocking Web sites, but the rule is slightly more lenient when it comes to blocking applications and services. The rule only prohibits these companies from blocking access to applications that specifically compete with a carrier’s telephony voice or video services. In each case, the blocking rule also allows fixed and wireless broadband providers to reasonably manage their networks.

4-And finally, the last rule applies only to fixed broadband providers. It prohibits fixed wireline broadband providers from unreasonably discriminating against traffic on their network.

I have a egomaniac on my facebook friends list that has like 3,500 friends.
—–

Since the announcement of Google+, there’s been a lot of talk about how the service will integrate games onto its platform. But nothing official has been said.

Based on some recent domain registrations by PopCap Games, it looks like PopCap may be one of the first. When PopCap ports games to Windows or Mac, it often uses “”Deluxe”” in the name. Now it’s registered names with “”plus””.

Here’s the scoop:

If you run a story, please attribute the information to Fusible.com

Thanks

http://fusible.com/2011/07/is-popcap-going-to-port-to-google-playbejeweledblitzplus-com-registered/

—–

The one thing sort of overlooked in the whole VZW tiered data news is that VZW just probably cost itself a huge swath of converts that would probably have switched from at&t when the iPhone finally launches. Instead, now they will stay with at&t with their grandfathered plans.
If you think about it, by grandfathering us in to unlimited data, they have effectively locked us in, in a way that even the 2 year contracts haven’t done. I know for me, so long as I can maintain my grandfathered data plan, I’m not even going to entertain the thought of changing providers.
Love the show.

After I got the email I did a bit of searching to find my information has been offered up for download since 29th June (with plain text passwords).
It is bad enough that Universal has let this happen by why wait six days before suggesting I may want to change my passwords. ARGGHH!!!

—–

Hey Buzz Crew,

OK, so I have almost sent this email several times. I don’t want to be the bad girlfriend here, but I don’t think I can let this one go anymore. My boyfriend is HORRIBLE with internet security. Every few weeks I come home to full screen “”You need to buy our virus scan software”” style malware on our shared computer. This is our only desktop and I have a habit of going to check my utility and bank statements on it YIKES! I am the computer savy half and I know this fact embarrasses him, so how do I deal with this?

Thanks
Taylor

——-

Wouldn’t you know it, the little guy just couldn’t wait to see this great world with his own two eyes.

He ended up coming a bit early, leaving me scrambling to make my own little mix with my wife’s water already broken. But all worked out well – we started the trip to the hospital with some good ol’ “”Push It””, moved to gentle songs like Frou Frou “”Breath In”” to keep the mood calm, and mixed in spicier numbers like “”You and me and the Bottle Makes 3 tonight”” to keep those muscles working.

But the greatest moment was turning some heads at the hospital entrance with Bon Jovi blaring – that’s right, the Pièce de résistance, “”Born to be my Baby””

A day and a half later, my wife, who weighed 105 pounds (before labor) gave birth to a very happy 9 pound 1 once baby. Alexander Danger (Danger is his… middle name he says in his terrible Austin Powers impersonation) can’t wait to hear his Aunt Molly and Uncle Brian without mom’s belly in the way.

Good luck all,
